An uncommon amount of noise settled during the day. See the figure. The contrast is striking.
Although there is no proof that this noise is linked to the atmospheric pressure, we are left with no more hypothesis. "A few fluries" had been forecasted for tonight. Obviously, one could suspect the effect of the wind on movements of the house. However there was no special wind condition today. Also the radar images showed the clouds slowly moving above the station this afternoon."
This phenomenon has been obseved regularly in the past. Although I was a little sceptical regarding the actual cause of this noise, I can not find any other factor. I should mention that the instrument is inside a barometric enclosure. It is not under vacuum, but in a rigid, hermetically sealled vessel. (See the figures at the bottom of this page.) Although this is not perfect, the shielding should be suffcient as the wall deformation is minimal.
Therefore the effect should likely be due to gravity fluctuations as the clouds move in-and-out above the station. Wow! Now you see my scepticism.

I am an amateur radio operator (VE2KLW) and every day at 00h00 UTC, I meet some friends on the 80 meter frequency band. However, today the communication is impossible due to a solar geomagnetic storm. Well, well, well. Over the last 12 hours, the "K_p" factor went from the usual "normal" value of 2 to the "strong" value of 5. The coincidance is strong. But that is no proof... Once more I have to say that I do not know the actual source of the noise.

The AM1 seismometer is now back in operation! After a mains power failure, followed by a computer crash,(a plastic clip holding the CPU and its heat-sink was found broken!) I could not rebalance the beam. I opened the hermetic chamber several times to manually reset the beam, but the result was the increased background noise by a factor of one hundred, probably due to some friction inside the force transducer. Finally I had to put this on the back burner due to my kidney operation in June. I was finally resigned to do a major realignment, one week ago. There it is; this M-7.6 plot from Cape Horn appears to be normal.
